He has been suffering from age-related complications. He was declared dead at Birdem Hospital at about 6.30pm.

Huq had retired in 1988 as cabinet secretary and was awarded Bangladesh’s highest civilian award “Swadhinata Padak” in 2005 for his contributions in social work.

He is survived by his wife, four daughters, and many well wishers.

Huq's family members said his namaz-e-Janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Zuhr prayers on Monday. He will be buried at Banani graveyard afterwards.

Born at Banoripara in Barisal, he joined the Pakistan civil service in 1954.

He served in different capacities in several ministries including as secretary.

After the war of independence in 1971, he served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, among other ministries.

He also served as the Chairman of the National Pay Commission and a member of the Planning Commission.

Huq was regarded as a “Bhasha Shainik”, as he joined the 1952 language movement for which he had also been jailed.

He was awarded with the “Suhrawardy Award” for his role in the language movement.

He was also awarded the 'Atishdipankar Gold Medal' in 1993 for his life-long involvement with social and health service.

According to his family members, he was also the Vice President of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, and National Heart Foundation and Research Hospital.

He had worked as a special advisor to UNICEF and Chairman of the earlier Grindlays Bank, now Standard Chartered Bank.
