The body of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar was not found at the flat in Kolkata’s Bidhannagar where Kolkata police believe he was killed, according to Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud.
The minister made the statement to the media following an event at Dhaka University on Wednesday.
In response to a reporter’s question about the return of the body to Bangladesh, he said, “The matter is under investigation. The body has yet to be found. The Kolkata police entered the flat but told our mission that they had not found a body. We heard it from the deputy high commissioner in Kolkata.”
In response to a question from the media, he said, “The killing of MP Anar is very sad, shocking, and unfortunate.”
“Kolkata police entered the flat where he is believed to have been killed, but found no body there. However, the prime suspect in the case and a few others have been arrested by the DB. Kolkata police have also arrested two people.”
Asked whether India had expressed its condolences over the issue, Mahmud said, “The incident is very unfortunate. As the home minister also noted, it was a pre-meditated murder. So, it’s not really an issue of our two countries.”
Anar is the president of the Kaliganj Upazila unit of the Awami League and won his third consecutive term as Jhenaidah-4 MP in January by running under the party ticket.
He had entered India by the Darshana-Gede border on May 11.
He had been staying with a friend named Gopal Biswas. Biswas had filed a general diary at the police station on May 18 after Anar had gone missing. The GD stated that he had left the house on the afternoon of May 13 and had not returned. But, a message from his WhatsApp number stated that he was going to Delhi.
Anar’s daughter Mumtarin Ferdoush Dorin contacted the Detective Branch of Dhaka police, informing them her father had gone missing.
After several days of back-and-forth communication between police of the two countries, news of Anar’s killing was published by Kolkata media outlets on Wednesday. The reports said his body was found in a multi-storey apartment block called Sanjiva Garden in the city’s New Town area.
“The investigation to discover how the murder was conducted is ongoing,” the foreign minister said in response to another question about the MP’s murder. “The home ministry will provide the details. We are keeping up with it through our mission. The mission is in regular contact with the Kolkata police.”
“We are maintaining contact with the home ministry from our end. The issue is under investigation. I can’t say more than that.”
