Saju Mia filed the case against the Gaibandha-1 MP hours after the latter’s brother-in-law submitted his firearms to the Sundarganj Police Station around 6:30pm on Saturday, OC Ismail Hossain said.

His brother-in-law Tariqul Islam submitted his pistol, shotgun and ammunitions at the police station, the OC said.

Superintendent of Police Md Ashraful Alam said there had been allegations that Liton used the firearms in carrying out nefarious acts.

“Police received many complaints about him creating panic by firing shots from his pistol and shotgun on several occasions without any provocation,” he said.

MP Liton, however, did not turn up on Saturday, a day after the shooting.

Earlier, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Faruk Hossain told bdnews24.com that the law enforcers did not know about the MP’s whereabouts.

He said they would launch a manhunt for Liton after filing of the case.

Fourth grader Shahadat Hossain Sourav was taking a morning walk with his uncle Shahjahan Ali on Friday when Liton allegedly opened fire while returning home in Bamandanga, family members said.

The MP had stopped his car at the town’s BRAC Intersection in Gopalcharan area and told Shahjahan to get into his car.

Shahjahan said as he panicked and ran Liton became agitated and fired several shots. Sourav was hit by bullets on his legs.

Two of bullets also pierced through the lungi of a bystander, Tajul Islam.

Those close to the MP had allegedly tried to prevent the child from being taken to hospital in an attempt to hush up the matter.
