Gazipur face RMG protests

RMG workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Kaliyakoir upazila of Gazipur for more than an hour on Sunday demanding a minimum wage of Tk 8,000.

Kaliyakoir police's OC Omar Faruk said the demonstrators damaged a few vehicles and hurled stones at garment factories during the protest.

At around 10:45am, traffic resumed on the highway after police had lobbed tear-gas canisters to disperse the protestors.

Witnesses said workers of Nayagra Textiles of Chandra area took to the streets around 9:30am and stopped traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

Police said, the protestor then went to the Polli Bidyut area asking workers of factories over there to join them. Stones were hurled at the factories then

Soon after, workers from a few other factories joined the protest.

The police lobbed tear-gas shells to chase them off from the highway .

At 10:45am, the protesting workers left the highway and the traffic resumed.

RMG workers at Gazipur, Narayanganj and Savar had turned violent on Saturday alleging 'obstruction’ while trying to join a rally.

Saturday's unrest led to a shutdown of more than 50 factories around Gazipur.
