Motorcycles still roam St Martin’s beaches
Motorcycles still roam St Martin’s beaches

Despite a ban, motorcycles continue to operate on the beaches of St Martin’s Island. Between Dec 4-7, tourists were seen riding rented motorcycles across almost all of the island’s beaches. Among the 12 government directives issued for travel to St Martin’s during December and January, motorcycle use on the beaches was strictly prohibited. However, the ban appears to be largely unenforced.

A cleanup campaign was held on St Martin’s Island on the occasion of the 40th International Coastal Cleanup Day. Keokradong Bangladesh partnered with the global initiative by the US-based environmental organisation Ocean Conservancy. About 500 volunteers, including students, participated in this campaign to remove non-biodegradable and plastic waste from the beach with the support of Unilever Bangladesh.

St Martin’s Island, bereft of tourists

Images from St Martin’s Island usually feature the hustle and bustle of its busy tourist industry. But the island also has another face, one that is quieter and, to many, more charming. Without tourists the coral island is devoid of the usual noise and the chatter at the stores and stalls. Instead, there is only the blue sea, the white sand, and the hidden melody of nature on the wind.
