When water lilies bloom in Munshiganj's Arial Beel, it brings smiles on the faces of hundreds of locals. The flowers not only add to the beauty of the wetland, but they are also a source of income for many local residents. With demand for lilies high as a vegetable, large quantities are harvested and sent to Dhaka and other areas, where they sell well. However, due to reduced water levels and pollution, the Beel no longer yields as many lilies as it once did.

During the monsoon season, the Beel is flooded, but in winter, it dries up and turns into a vast grain field. Arial Beel, spanning 136 sq km in Srinagar Upazila, Munshiganj, is primarily known for cultivating pumpkins alongside other vegetables. The pumpkins grown here are significantly larger than those found in other regions of Bangladesh.

Arial Beel is located between the Padma and Dhaleshwari rivers in Munshiganj’s Sreenagar Upazila. It is the largest and oldest beel in the central part of Bangladesh. The roots of water lilies, which grow without any effort in the wetland in the rainy season, were once the food of the poor. The demand for the esculent roots has recently increased a lot among the people due to its popularity for nutrition. They offer an opportunity to earn only by accepting the difficulty of plucking them from the water as there is no cost for production. That's why many people along the banks of haor and beel are interested in picking up the roots.
