Colombian soccer player arrested for drunken driving
Bogota, September 5 (BDNEWS)- Former Colombian national team forward Jairo Castillo was arrested in southwest Colombia for allegedly driving drunk early Sunday, less than three months after he was convicted of killing two women in a car crash, authorities said.
Castillo, 27, remained in a holding cell later Sunday in Cali, 300 kilometers southwest of Bogota, said the city's police chief, Col. Jesus Antonio Gomez.
In 2001, witnesses and police said Castillo was at the wheel of a pickup truck that was speeding, ran a traffic light, and crashed into a taxi and two utility poles near Cali. Two sisters with him in the pickup were killed. A whiskey bottle was found in the vehicle.
On June 13, a judge found him guilty of killing the women and he was sentenced to 36 months in jail. But he was given parole on the condition he could not drive or drink.
Castillo played for Spain's Real Valladolid until his conviction, and in the past few months he has been practicing with various Colombian pro teams.
He last was selected for the Colombian national team for World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Venezuela in March, but has not been recalled since.
