Bangladesh coach Javier Cabrera remains hopeful that Hamza Choudhury will return in time for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore, despite lingering concerns over the Leicester City midfielder’s knee injury.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA) Iftar event, the Spanish coach said he had been in regular contact with both Hamza and Leicester City’s medical team.
Cabrera said the coaching staff are positive and hopes his recovery will go “very well”.
Bangladesh will take on Singapore on Mar 31 in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers.
Hamza’s availability for the match had come into doubt after he sustained a knee injury earlier this month during an English Championship game against Charlton Athletic.
Cabrera said the rehabilitation was progressing “step by step”, and to his knowledge, Hamza could return to the field around mid-March.
“Based on that, we will decide when he can join the camp. If everything goes well, we are hopeful he will at least be available for the Singapore match.”
Cabrera also said he had spoken with another overseas player, Shamit Som, who is eager to join the national team camp.
“I spoke with Shomit the day before yesterday. He is very excited to join the camp as soon as possible. We will try to have him in the Dhaka camp, and he is fully fit.”
The Bangladesh coach indicated that the national team’s training camp for the Singapore match could begin shortly after the domestic league resumes.
The Bangladesh Premier League’s second phase will start on Mar 6 after a 61-day break, with the eleventh round concluding on Mar 14.
