Dhaka, Aug 3 (bdnews24.com) — Slain former finance minister Shah A M S Kibria's family has expressed concern before the prime minister that the present investigation may not help get justice in the case.
Reza Kibria, the son, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday him and his mother Asma Kibria held a closed door meeting with Sheikh Hasina for about 40 minutes in the morning.
"We have told the prime minister that with the kind of investigation going on in my father's death, proper justice may always remains a far cry," Reza, a professor at the Griffith University in Australia, said.
In the meeting, the Kibria family also expressed their dissatisfaction with the investigating officer in the murder case.
Reza also suggested that the case could be investigated by the United Nations.
"Hariri's case in Lebanon was investigated by the UN. My father's case could also be investigated by the UN," the former IMF economist said.
The prime minister assured the Kibria family that she was keeping herself abreast of the developments in the case.
"The prime minister has assured us that she is giving personal attention to her former finance minister's case," Reza said.
Reza, who was also an economic advisor to the treasury department of Papua New Guinea, said he and his mother had thanked the prime minister for the personal audience.
Former finance minister and Awami League leader Kibria and four others were killed in a grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Habiganj on Jan 27, 2005. Over 70 people were also injured in the gruesome attack.
Abdul Majid Khan, then general secretary of Awami League's district unit and currently an MP, filed two cases over the incident.
CID officer Munshi Atiqur Rahman submitted a charge-sheet naming 10 people on Mar 10, 2005 when the caretaker government was in office. But the High Court ordered further investigation into the killing.
After the new IO Mohammad Rafiqul Islam of CID submitted a new charge-sheet to court on June 20, Asma Kibria told bdnews24.com that only the names of some 'small fries' of the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) were included in it.
The charge-sheet, against 14 people, included former BNP state minister Lutfozzaman Babar.
Babar, now behind the bars in an arms case, was also shown arrested in connection with the grenade attack.
Another five accused, including HuJI leader Mufti Hannan, are also behind bars.
