Dhaka, Dec 2 (bdnews24.com)—The High Court on Tuesday summarily rejected a writ petition filed by former minister Mirza Abbas challenging a tax dodging case filed against him by the National Board of Revenue.
Abbas also appealed to the HC bench of justice Mirza Hossain Haider and justice Borhan Uddin for staying his conviction in the case. A trial court sentenced the BNP leader to 8 years imprisonment in the case.
Advocate Ahshanul Karim moved the petition for Mirza Abbas, while attorney general Salahuddin Ahmed opposed it.
A separate HC bench of justices Mir Hasmat Ali and Shamim Hasnain judged illegal the detention of former BNP lawmaker MAH Selim alias 'Silver Selim'.
The court directed the government to set Selim at liberty if he is not wanted in any other case. Barrister Rafuque-ul-Haq represented Selim in the hearing.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court upheld a HC order granting bail to Swechhasebak League General Secretary Pangkaj Devnath in a corruption case filed by the Anticorruption Commission.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by chief justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order.
Pangkaj was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth. The HC granted him bail in the case o Nov 11 this year.
The same four member appellate bench vacated the stay order passed by the Appellate Division chamber judge in a tax dodging case filed against Pangkaj Devnath by the NBR.
The chamber judge had stayed a March 12 HC order quashing the proceedings of the case.
Barrister Amir-ul-Islam and advocate Enayetur Rahim appeared for Pangkaj.
