Dhaka, Mar 02 (BDNEWS) – The High Court Wednesday ordered the Dhaka University authorities to attach the word 'Muslim' with its student's dormitory AK Fazlul Huq Hall as it was before 1972.
A division bench of the High Court comprising Justice Joynul Abedin and Justice Meftauddin Chowdhury issued the rule after a hearing.
The Syndicate of Dhaka University, on June 16, 1972, axed the word 'Muslim' from the name of its dormitory 'Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall'.
Advocate Shamsul Alam, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, had filed a writ petition challenging the validity of the decision of the syndicate axing the word 'Muslim' from the name of the hall.
The High Court on June 12, 2004, issued a rule upon the Vice Chancellor and Register of Dhaka University and Provost of Fazlul Huq Hall to show cause as to why the Syndicate's decision erasing the word 'Muslim' from the name of the hall should not be declared illegal.
The High Court on Wednesday declared the rule absolute and decision of the University syndicate as illegal.
Advocate ABM Nurul Islam moved for the petitioner before the court while assistant attorney general Zaman Akhter Bulbul stood for the university.
Earlier, the High Court ordered the Dhaka University authorities to put in the word 'Muslim' with its student's dormitory Salimullah Hall as it was before 1972.
