Former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed laid to rest

Kazi Zafar Ahmed, chief of a Jatiya Party faction, has been buried in full state honour next to his parents at the family graveyard in Comilla’s Chouddagram Upazila.

He was laid to rest around 8:15pm on Saturday, his Personal Assistant Golam Mostofa told bdnews24.com.

 

Earlier a police team led by Upazila administration officials gave Ahmed a guard of honour, Mostofa added.

 

Ahmed’s body was taken to his ancestral home at the Upazila’s Chiorha village from Dhaka earlier in the day.

 

Namaj-e-Janaza for him were held at different areas on the way. The prayers were attended by hundreds of people including leaders and activists of different political parties.

 

Ahmed’s wife Mamtaz Begum, three daughters Kazi Jaya Ahmed, Kazi Sonia Ahmed and Kazi Runa Ahmed, other family members and leaders of the Jatiya Party splinter group he led were present when he was buried.

 

Ahmed, who had played a significant political role as the organiser of various movements, suffered a heart attack and died on Thursday morning. He was 76.

 

He had served as education minister under military ruler Ziaur Rahman and was prime minister in autocrat HM Ershad’s regime.

 

Kazi Zafar was affiliated to the ‘pro-China’ Communist Party as a student leader in the 1960s. 

 

He had emerged as a labour leader through his participation in political activities in Tongi’s industrial area.
