Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir says the people of the country know who killed intellectuals on the eve of independence.
The intellectuals were killed by the plan of the force that opposed Bangladesh’s independence, he said on Sunday evening.
“[Martyred] Intellectuals Day makes us very sad. It was the result of a calculated blueprint to deprive the nation of its intellectuals just two days before they won independence,” said Fakhrul while attending a discussion marking the day.
The saddest aspect of this episode in history, he said, is that those who collaborated with the Pakistani occupation forces in picking up and killing the intellectuals were Bengalis.
“We know today very well who they were,” he said, adding that it was not something that could be taken lightly.
On Dec 14, 1971, as Pakistan’s surrender neared during the Liberation War, its forces killed numerous intellectuals.
He said each and every attack and conspiracy made against the nation invariably tried to hold back the awakening of the nation, keeping it intellectually subordinate.
Awami League carried out a similar “conspiracy” over the last 15 years, he said.
The discussion was organised by the BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
He cited the shooting of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, just a day after the announcement of election schedule, as a continuation of anti-Bangladesh conspiracy.
“He was a soldier against fascists,” he said.
He urged his party leaders and activists to stay strong to resist these conspiracies.
