BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said holding general elections without delay will resolve all crises currently besetting Bangladesh.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Amar Bangladesh Party, or AB Party, national council on Saturday noon, Fakhrul explained his call for the early election.
He said, “Once the elections are held, we will get much stronger. The government will be formed, parliament will be in place, and many things will become stronger.
“The crises that have arisen will be resolved."
Fakhrul dismissed claims that the party is desperate for elections before implementing reforms.
He defended: "We have always talked about reforms, and we are repeating it—we want reforms.
"There are some people who try to mislead the public by suggesting that we want elections before reforms, that we are desperate for elections. That is not true.”
The interim government, which assumed power following the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024, has initiated reforms across different sectors.
The BNP, along with several other political parties, has been demanding “crucial” reforms before holding parliamentary elections.
Fakhrul also reiterated his party’s vision for a united government after the ballot to address the nation’s challenges.
“We have also expressed our desire to form a united national government after the elections. Together, we aim to solve all the state’s problems.
“Those in our party, as well as members of other parties, should consider and reflect on this.”
The BNP leader expressed his support for the Muhammad Yunus-led government.
“Through elections, we will move forward towards progress,” he said.
