Dhaka, Aug 26 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka court has granted four days' remand for Saiful Islam Duke in the August 21 grenade attack case.
Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court judge M Ali Hossain on Thursday rejected Duke's appeal for bail, and allowed the police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take him into custody for questioning.
The investigation officer of the case, special CID superintendent, Abdul Kahar Akand, had applied for seven days' remand for Duke, a nephew of BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
It was stated in the remand application that Lt Com Duke had helped Moulana Tajuddin Ahmed, a prime suspect in the case, to escape to Pakistan.
It was found while questioning the other suspects arrested in the case that they had close contacts with Duke. In their statements, the suspects also claimed Duke's involvement in the attack.
The CID application reasoned that it was important to question Duke in remand to learn more about the collection and supply of the grenades used in the attack, and the names and addresses of other persons involved.
Masud Alam Talukdar, Sanaullah Mia and other lawyers argued against the remand application for Duke, and appealed for his bail.
They alleged that Duke was shown arrested in this case simply to hamper his political image.
