Chittagong elects Twarikat too

The Awami League has won seven out of the nine constituencies in Chittagong in the general election, boycotted by the Opposition.

Candidates from the Jatiya Party and Twarikat Foundation won the remaining two.

The unofficial results were announced from two separate control rooms set up at the meeting room of Chittagong District Administration and gymnasium.

The winners are Twarikat Federation’s Nazibul Boshor Maizbhandari at Chittagong-2 (Fatikchharhi), Awami League’s Mahfuzur Rahman Mita at Chittagong -3 (Sandwip), Awami League’s Didarul Alam at Chittagong-4 (Sitakunda and parts of the city) and Jatiya Party’s Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu at Chittagong-9 (Kotwali).

Other winning candidates from Awami League are MA Latif from Chittagong-11 (port), Shamsul Haque Chowdhury from Chittagong-12 (Patia), Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed Chittagong-13 (Anwara), Abu Reza Nezamuddin Naqvi Chittagong-15 (Satkania) and Mostafizur Rahman Joy from Chittagong-16 (Banshkhali).

Six out of the remaining seven seats among the total 16 constituencies in Chittagong saw Awami League candidates win uncontested. The remaining one was won by a Jatiya Party candidate.

Therefore, 13 members of the Awami League are victors among the 16 seats of Chittagong.

The turnout was low throughout as polling continued for nine constituencies from 8am to 4pm Sunday. But island Upazila Sandwip had 65 percent and Anwara 68 percent turnout.

Satkania and Lohagarha saw violence while votes were being held. An Islami Chhatra Shibir member was shot and killed in Lohagarha as he was trying to snatch a ballot box.

Chittagong-2 (Fatikchharhi): Twarikat Federation’s Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari won with electoral symbol ‘boat’ and 1,25,351 votes. Closest contender, independent candidate Mahmud Hasan’s poll symbol Pineapple got 12,433 votes.

Total poll centres 133 and voters 3,26,114. Turnout was 43 percent.

Chittagong-3 (Sandip): Awami Leagues Mahfuzur Rahman Mita bagged 1,11,743 votes with his closest rival Jatiya Party’s MA Salam getting 3,466.

Total centres 79 and voters 1,76,872. Turn out came down to 65.18 per cent.

Chittagong-4 (Sitakunda and parts of the city): Awami League’s Didarul Alam got 1,53,815 votes and JaSaD’s AFM Mofizur Rahman came closest with symbol ‘torch’ getting 4,462 votes.

Total centres for the seat were 103 and voters 3,50,089. Voter turnout 46.16 per cent.

Chittagong-9 (Kotwali): Jatiya Party candidate and Prime Minister’s advisor Ziauddin Bablu got 79,779 votes for his symbol ‘plough’. Workers Party candidate Abu Hanif’s symbol ‘hammer’ got 3,599 votes.

Total polling centres 143 and voters 3,62,497. Voter turnout was 24 per cent.

Chittagong-11 (Port): Awami League’s MA Latif got 68,032 votes. His closest contender Jatiya Party’s Kamal Uddin Chowdhury got 1,990 votes.

Total voters for the seat 4,84,979. 14 per cent of the voters were present in its 142 centres.

Chittagong-12 (Patia): Awami League candidate Shamsul Haque Chowdhury got 1,28,214 votes and Jatiya Party’s Sirajul Islam came closest with 10,197 votes.

Polling took place at 99 centres. The constituency has 2,50,005 voters. Turnout was 56.38 per cent.

Chittagong-13 (Anwara): Awami League’s Saiduzzaman Jabed got 1,78,985 votes whereas his closest contender Tapan Chakraborty got 5,418 votes.

Votes were held at 97 centres for the constituency which has 2,72,787 voters. Voter turnout was 69.95 per cent.

Chittagong-15 (Satkania-Lohagara): Awami League’s Abu Reza Mohammad Nadvi got 1,01,866 votes as opposed to this closest rival BNF’s Joynal Abedin Kaderi’s symbol’television’ which bagged 4,448 votes.

Results have arrived from 136 of the 138 centres in Satkania. Polling at two centres were halted because of attacks by Jamaat-e-Islami supporters. These are Chadaha Mohila Madrasa (Voter: 2,841) and Azimpur Govt Primary School (2,941). Total voters for this constituency are 3,36,112. Voter turnout was 32.54 per cent.

Chittagong-16 (Banshkhali): Awami League’s Mostafizur Rahman got 1,47,855 votes. Closest candidate, Jatiya Party’s Haider Ali’s electoral symbol ‘Bicycle’ got 6,878 votes.

Total polling centres 110 and voters 2,68,567. Turnout came to be 58.08 per cent.
