Dhaka, Oct 9 (bdnews24.com) – Main opposition BNP will stage protests at the Upazila- and district-levels on Sunday, over the death of Natore's Baraigram Upazila chairman Sanaullah Noor Babu.
In addition, protests will be held in the capital on Oct 12, BNP secretary general Khandker Delwar Hossian declared the programme from a press conference at the party's Naya Paltan headquarters on Saturday.
Local BNP leaders called for a day-long general strike in Natore on Sunday in protest against the killing.
Sanaullah, the Baraigram Upazila chairman and Bonpara municipal BNP president, died on Friday afternoon after being fatally injured in an attack, reportedly carried out by ruling Awami League supporters.
The clash, which also left 40 others of the main opposition party injured, erupted around 11am on Friday when the BNP activists brought out a procession at Bonpara Bazar under Baraigram Upazila, as part of its month-long protest programme.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a statement on Friday night, said it appeared that the ruling party would stop at nothing to wipe out its political opponents. "Juba League and Chhatra League have become reckless since the Awami League took office. It seems they have launched the 'project' to erase the opposition," she said.
Natore BNP leaders alleged that the attack was launched by district Awami League publication and research secretary Zakir Hossain, Upazila Chhatra League general secretary Shafiqul Islam, and Juba League activists 'Rakib', 'Jamil' and 'Bablu'.
Zakir, however, denied the allegations.
Baraigram police chief Anwar Hossain had told bdnews24.com: "The BNP leaders arranged the programme without informing the police. We wanted to help them but they did not cooperate."
