Dhaka, Dec 2 (bdnews24.com)— BNP has threatened the government with relentless protests after Sunday's shutdown if it does not go back on its decision to split the city corporation in two.
"We will not let our Dhaka that we hold o close to our hearts be split in two. Sunday's hartal is just the beginning. Endless protest programmes will be given if the government does not back down from dividing the city," acting-secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a rally on Friday.
The party has called for a general strike in Dhaka blockage in protest at the government move.
The rally was organised in front of the main opposition's Naya Paltan headquarters as part of a three-day programme to protest against the government move to split the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).
The programmes include rallies in every thana of the capital on Saturday and a day-long general strike in the city on Sunday.
Fakhrul asked party leaders and supporters of all wards to take position in the street during the blockade.
.
The president on Thursday signed into law the bill formalising the division of Dhaka City Corporation, and relieving former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka of his duties.
Following a petition, filed by BNP's city unit chief Sadeque Hossain Khoka, who had been the mayor of Dhaka for nine years, the High Court on Wednesday asked the government and the Election Commission why the bill should not be declared void.
The government says it is not Dhaka, but the city corporation that is being divided to better serve its residents.
