The Election Commission (EC) has asked television channels to refrain from airing insults, derogatory remarks or personal attacks in talk shows and election-related discussions ahead of the 13th national election and referendum due in February next year.
In a letter sent on Wednesday to the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the EC also called on broadcasters to ensure equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates in election programmes.
In a statement issued by its public relations wing, the EC said creating an environment for a free, fair and credible election was “extremely important”.
It said both state-run and private television channels could play a key role by providing balanced coverage and equal access to candidates.
The commission said that during the broadcast of interviews, talk shows and election dialogues linked to the upcoming polls, channels should ensure that no party or candidate is given undue advantage.
Referring to Rule 25 of the election code of conduct, the EC said candidates and party representatives are allowed to take part in televised election dialogues, but must not make remarks that personally attack others.
The commission warned that caution and necessary steps should be taken to prevent the broadcast of statements that demean or insult any party or candidate, while ensuring equal participation for all contenders.
Under the announced schedule, candidates have until Dec 29 to submit nomination papers. Scrutiny of nominations will take place between Dec 30 and Jan 4.
Appeals against returning officers’ decisions may be filed with the EC by Jan 11, with hearings set to end by Jan 18.
Candidates will be able to withdraw nominations until Jan 20, after which the final list of candidates will be published and election symbols allocated on Jan 21.
Election campaigning is due to begin on Jan 22 and will continue until 7:30am on Feb 10. Voting is scheduled to take place on Feb 12, from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
