The BNP has reportedly expelled or removed several thousand of its leaders and activists over “misconduct”, warning that no one will be spared for using the party’s name to commit violence, criminal acts, or unethical behaviour.
Speaking at the party’s Naya Paltan office in Dhaka on Friday, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi outlined the party’s “hardline stance”, disclosing a list of punitive measures taken over recent incidents.
“Anyone using the party’s identity for immoral, illegal, or violent actions will not be spared,” he said.
“We investigate immediately, review video and audio evidence, and act without hesitation.”
Addressing journalists, Rizvi said: “We’re presenting this before you to make sure no one else dares to repeat such acts.
“Anyone involved in violence or terror-related behaviour within the party, or with neighbours or others, will not be spared.”
The senior leader went on to list recent disciplinary actions taken against the BNP members in the last 24 hours across multiple districts.
“In Kurigram’s Chilmari, leaders caused chaos during a torch procession, carried out vandalism, and attacked fellow activists over a dispute about forming a committee,” he said.
“Following an investigation, we immediately removed Joint Convenor Saeed Hossain Pakhi and member Abdul Matin Shirin of Chilmari Upazila BNP from all posts, including their primary membership.”
In Cumilla’s Panchthubi Union (South), Local General Secretary Khokon Mia was expelled for allegedly engaging in violence and carrying weapons in the party’s name.
Rizvi said photographs supporting these claims had also surfaced.
He also also confirmed the expulsion of Ibrahim Hawlader, general secretary of Chanrchra Union BNP in Bhola’s Tazumuddin Upazila.
“He, along with several miscreants, physically assaulted a female BNP leader who also heads the union’s unit of the party’s women’s wing. This was an extremely unethical and cowardly act,” Rizvi said.
On Lalmonirhat, he said: “We have received reports from Patgram that individuals claiming to represent BNP entered a police station, vandalised property and allegedly snatched two people.
“An investigation is ongoing, and stern action has already been taken.”
Images and videos circulated on social media show vandalism and assaults on women inside Hotel Zakaria Bar in Mohakhali.
Media reports said the incident was led by Monir Hossain, convenor of the Banani unit of Jubo Dal, the BNP’s youth wing.
“As soon as we were informed, the Jubo Dal leadership expelled him from the organisation,” Rizvi said.
“We have acted promptly on all such information received since the 5th of August.”
He presented the most recent incidents from Thursday and Friday at the briefing to underline the party’s continued vigilance.
“Our message to all party leaders and activists is that they must act responsibly and with dignity in public,” Rizvi said.
“Their responsibility is to win the trust of people,” he said. “They must show through their actions that they are decent, courteous individuals. Those in politics must be the most refined people in society.”
‘ACTION TAKEN AGAINST 4,000 TO 5,000’
Rizvi said the BNP has acted swiftly wherever reports of misconduct emerged.
“Already, action has been taken against 4,000 to 5,000 BNP leaders and activists from the main party, its associate and affiliated organisations, who colluded with or formed criminal gangs, or were involved in immoral activities under the party’s name,” he said.
According to him, the BNP leadership remains uncompromising in such matters, with Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman maintaining a policy of “zero tolerance”.
