Abdullah Mohammad Taher, deputy chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami, has signalled the party’s intent to exercise rigorous parliamentary oversight within the next assembly.
Emphasising a commitment to legislative vigilance, Taher said, while the party remains dedicated to national stability, it will serve as a formidable check to ensure the new administration remains accountable to the public interest.
Following Tarique Rahman’s visit to Shafiqur Rahman’s home on Sunday, Taher said Jamaat promises to work with the BNP in the future for “nation-building”.
The meeting took place at the Jamaat chief’s Bashundhara residence.
Tarique’s visit comes as the BNP, having secured an absolute majority in the general election, prepares to form the government on Tuesday.
He said his party called on the new government to improve the law and order to protect people and their property.
“The two parties will work together toward 'nation-building' by maintaining a harmonious relationship among political parties. This meeting between Tarique Rahman and the Jamaat ameer will create a positive environment for the politics of the future,” Taher said.
The Jamaat leader said any future disagreements between the two parties would be settled through discussion and dialogue.
Results for 297 seats in the parliamentary polls have been published. The BNP has secured 209 seats, while Jamaat has claimed 68.
The new government is scheduled to be installed on Tuesday through an oath-taking ceremony at the South Plaza of the parliament complex.
