51 parties to contest in Bangladesh's general elections

A total of 478 candidates seek to run as independents

In the general election, 2,090 candidates from 51 political parties have submitted nomination papers, while 478 seek to run as independent candidates.

Among these parties, the BNP has the highest number of candidates in 300 seats, with 331 nominations submitted.

The Jamaat-e-Islami has fielded the second-highest number of candidates with 276, while Islami Andolan Bangladesh is third with 268.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has fielded 44 candidates, while 224 nomination papers from the Jatiya Party and seven from the JaSaD have also been submitted.

A total of 2,569 nomination papers have been submitted for the election to be held in February, excluding the Awami League, whose activities have been banned after being ousted in the 2024 mass uprising.

According to the schedule, Dec 29 was the last date for filing nomination papers.

The submitted papers will be scrutinised until Jan 4, and the final list of candidates will be published on Jan 20.

Those who receive election symbols the following day will contest the polls.

On Tuesday, a day after nominations closed, Election Commission (EC) Central Coordination Committee Convenor ASM Humayun Kabir presented the consolidated information for all 300 seats.

The data analysis showed candidates fielded from 51 parties.

The EC currently has 59 registered political parties. The Awami League is not contesting as its registration is suspended.

EC spokesperson said 2,569 nomination papers have been submitted for 300 seats.

Jatiya Party (JP) - 13 candidates

Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) - 65 candidates

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) - 331 candidates

Jatiya Party - 224 candidates

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) - 7 candidates

Jamaat-e-Islami - 276 candidates

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) - 31 candidates

Zaker Party - 7 candidates

Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BaSaD) - 41 candidates

Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) - 3 candidates

Bangladesh Khilafat Andolon - 11 candidates

Bangladesh Muslim League - 14 candidates

National People’s Party (NPP) - 23 candidates

Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh - 5 candidates

Gono Forum - 23 candidates

Gano Front - 6 candidates

Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) - 1 candidate

Bangladesh National Party - 5 candidates

Islami Front Bangladesh - 22 candidates

Bangladesh Kalyan Party - 3 candidates

Islami Oikya Jote - 3 candidates

Bangladesh Equal Rights Party (BEP) - 1 candidate

Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party - 6 candidates

Along with 478 independent candidates, and one from the Bangladesh Nationalist Motor Workers’ Party.

REGISTERED PARTIES NOT PARTICIPATING

Parties not fielding candidates include the Bangladesh Communist Party (BaSaD-ML), Krishak Sramik Janata League, Bangladesh National Awami Party, Bangladesh Workers Party, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Trinamool BNP, and the Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM).
