Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has expressed concern over whether the parliamentary elections and referendum will be free and fair.

The head of NCP’s central election committee, Asif alleged that the administration is displaying a form of “one-sided bias” in favour of a specific party.

The former student advisor’s claim came during a briefing on Tuesday afternoon, following a meeting with the chief election commissioner at the Nirbachan Bhaban.

The July Uprising frontliner said, "The chief of a political party has recently come to the country.

“We certainly welcomed him on behalf of our party and personally, but what followed is a bad sign for Bangladesh’s democracy.

“We saw government officials and heads of intelligence agencies regularly [visit] a party office.”

Asif added, “This is a threat to the democracy of Bangladesh. The bad practices that we have seen during the Awami ‘fascism’ are rising again.”

On Dec 25 last year, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh from London after over 17 years.

His mother, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, died on Dec 30, 2025.

The NCP spokesperson said the Bangladeshi administration always favours the ruling party. “Before coming to power, before public mandate is given, we will not accept such a presumption in any way.

“We saw the NSI chief meet a party head at their office. While intelligence leaders may meet any political party for security matters, going to the party office is a bad sign.

“Meeting government officials this way is illegal and creates fear among people about voting and exercising their rights.”

The officials had violated government service rules by visiting a party office, he added.
