A Dhaka court has discharged 65 people, including senior BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas, in a case filed during anti-government protests in 2023.
On Thursday, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib accepted a final police report that cleared Fakhrul, Abbas, and 63 others of charges under the Explosives Act.
Other leaders discharged in the case include the party's Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice chairmen Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Barkat Ullah Bulu, former home minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, BNP Joint Secretary General Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, and Chairperson’s Advisor Zainul Abdin Farroque.
BNP leaders Aminul Haque, a former national footballer, and Ishraque Hossain were also among those cleared.
The charges stemmed from clashes between police and BNP supporters on Oct 28, 2023, when the party staged a rally in Dhaka. Law enforcers accused activists of vandalising vehicles, obstructing police duties, and detonating crude bombs.
A case was filed three days later by Ramna Police. But after the fall of the Awami League government in the July Uprising last year, investigators submitted final reports recommending the BNP leaders' discharge.
In December last year, Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court accepted one report. The latest ruling by the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court brings an end to the explosives case against the BNP leaders.
