Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is set to meet several political parties on Sunday amid growing political tensions in Bangladesh.
The meeting will take place in the evening at the chief advisor’s official residence State Guest House Jamuna, his Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder confirmed.
Before that, the interim prime minister is scheduled to hold separate meetings with the BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday night.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Azad said: “The chief advisor will meet several more parties on Sunday. But the list of those parties has not yet been finalised.”
Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party chief Mojibur Rahman Monju said he was contacted for the meeting.
“One of the advisors called me. He asked about timing and availability, and we said we’ll attend.”
He believes the meeting is likely to be held around 5pm.
According to Mojibur, the invitation has been extended to one representative from each political party that backed the July Uprising.
On Aug 8 last year, just three days after the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India amid student-led mass uprising, an interim government led by Yunus took oath.
The unity forged during the July Uprising lasted only a few months.
First, divisions emerged among student groups. Then tensions arose between the BNP and the Anti-discrimination Student Movement over the removal of the president and the July Proclamation.
After the formation of the new party National Citizen Party (NCP), disputes among allied parties over reforms and elections began surfacing more publicly.
In recent weeks, the BNP and the NCP have traded demands for the resignation of several advisors.
Reports surfaced on Wednesday that Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman had discussed holding elections by December during a meeting at Dhaka Cantonment.
Amid these developments, rumours swirled on Thursday that Yunus was “considering stepping down”.
After Saturday’s unscheduled Advisory Council meeting, Planning Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud said Yunus will “definitely” stay in office.
