Ariful Islam, the convenor of the July Mancha, has said a “new revolution” has begun in the wake of the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur.
On Saturday, a day after the attack on the former DUCSU vice-president, Ariful threatened that the Jatiya Party office would be the “first target” of this revolution.
Speaking at a brief rally following a protest march in Bijoynagar, Ariful said: “The revolution hasn’t ended yet.”
The protest followed a violent clash between the Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad at Bijoynagar on Friday evening.
Members of the Gono Odhikar Parishad staged a torch rally at 9:30pm, and after a briefing in front of the Jatiya Party office, they claimed that law enforcers beat the protesters.
Following the incident, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Army personnel were deployed to control the violence at the “request of police”. Five Army members were reported injured.
In response to the attack on Nur, political parties including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami condemned the incident. Members and students from Gono Odhikar Parishad held protests across Dhaka and Chittagong.
The July Mancha protesters marched with banners reading “Hulya march against enemies of Bangladesh's sovereignty, including Jatiya Party”.
Ariful also accused the Jatiya Party of collaborating with the ousted Awami League and warned that the July fighters would not allow Bangladesh to become like Kashmir.
“If the interim government is not dissolved and a revolutionary national government is formed, the July fighters will return to the streets.”
