BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has outlined his party's plans for the education sector, promising to establish a high-level commission for the nationalisation of teachers’ jobs and an education reform commission to overhaul the curriculum if his party comes to power.
In a virtual address on International Teachers' Day on Tuesday, Tarique said the BNP aims to “build the nation” through education, calling for the teachers’ “full cooperation”.
He said, “Many of you have mentioned the nationalisation of teachers' jobs, and some have called for including more educational institutions under the MPO. Beyond this, other demands are on the table from private teachers as well.”
Tarique said if the BNP wins the next elections and assumes power, they will form a high-level commission to evaluate teachers’ financial security, job permanency, and nationalisation, based on the country’s capabilities.
“God willing, we will look into these issues positively,” he added.
In addition, Tarique announced plans to form an education reform commission to prioritise making the existing curriculum more practical, with a focus on vocational and technical education.
He emphasised the need to modernise the education system based on ethics, religious values, and the practical needs of the job market.
“If we do not take urgent steps, it will be extremely difficult for our nation to survive in the competitive world.”
The rally, organised by the BNP-backed Teachers Employees Unity, also made several demands, including an equitable education system, setting the retirement age at 65, including non-MPO institutions under the MPO. Thousands of teachers from across the country participated in the event.
