The Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted its amended constitution and bank account details to the Election Commission six years after its registration was cancelled.
On Wednesday, a letter signed by the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar was handed over to the EC's Election Assistance Branch.
The EC had introduced political party registration rules before the ninth parliamentary election in 2008, granting registration to 39 parties, including the Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Many parties were required to amend their constitutions to comply with constitutional, legal, and regulatory standards, with Jamaat receiving several notices.
Ahead of the 10th parliamentary elections, however, the party’s registration was revoked. Jamaat submitted its last income and expenditure report before the registration was cancelled in 2013. After the July Uprising, the party regained its registration earlier this year.
As per legal requirements, Jamaat submitted its financial report on Jul 31. However, the report lacked a bank account number, prompting the EC to request additional information.
In response, on Wednesday, the party’s Assistant Secretary General Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair and central council member Jashim Uddin Sarker submitted an updated letter to the EC, outlining the two key updates: the amended constitution and the party’s bank account managed through the Islamic Bank.
The letter says Jamaat has been unable to operate any bank account since its registration was revoked in 2013 due to “adverse circumstances”.
The letter also said the 22nd amendment of Jamaat’s constitution was approved by the central council on Sept 24, 2019. This latest amendment was submitted to the EC on Jul 25.
In response to the EC’s request, Jamaat submitted another copy of the documents on Wednesday.
EC Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz confirmed, “The Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted its bank account number and amended constitution.” However, he was unable to provide details on the specific amendments made to the constitution.
