BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed has accused Jamaat-e-Islami of engaging in nothing but “hypocrisy”.
“BNP never supported Jamaat-e-Islami. Sheikh Mujib’s government banned Jamaat. It was during the BNP’s tenure that they got the opportunity to engage in politics in this country,” Rizvi said.
“But we have always seen that this party has no other agenda. It has only one trait — hypocrisy, he said..
“Apart from hypocrisy, Jamaat has done nothing else,” he added.
He made these remarks on Wednesday afternoon at a memorial event for Abdul Wahed Mondal at Taherpur High School field in Bagmara Upazila of Rajshahi.
The event was organised by Taherpur municipality BNP to mark Wahed’s 23rd death anniversary.
Referring to recent political movements, Rizvi said: “The blood-soaked movement of students and people, in which hundreds and thousands of young men like Abu Sayed and Mugdho [Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho] sacrificed their lives, drove out a ‘dangerous monster’ like Sheikh Hasina from the country.
“But just a few days later, Jamaat suddenly announced that they would forgive everything about the Awami League. Then how will you forgive Abu Sayed’s blood? How will you forgive Mughdo’s blood? How will you forgive Ahnaf’s blood?”
Rizvi also criticised Jamaat’s stance on India, saying: “India supported Sheikh Hasina with a dangerous agenda and continues to do so. If that India now becomes Jamaat’s favourite, then it is extremely unfortunate and deeply regrettable.”
The BNP leader also accused Hasina of corruption, saying: “She built the Padma Bridge and metro rail only to embezzle money. Her policy of bribery was behind the purchase of electricity from Adani at inflated prices.
“She has given India everything it wanted. She tried to sell out the country’s independence and sovereignty. But she was forced to surrender to the unity of students and the people,” Rizvi said.
