Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (DG) AKM Shahidur Rahman has cautioned that anyone attempting to disrupt the polls or the post-election period will face strict action from the force.
He issued the warning during a media briefing on the special security arrangements taken by RAB across the country ahead of the parliamentary election and referendum.
The briefing was held at the Rajdhani High School polling centre, opposite the parliament complex.
Replying to a question about whether there was any threat of terrorist attacks during the election, the elite force chief said: “We believe there is no threat; still, we remain on alert.”
He was also asked about the measures RAB has taken to handle outsiders from various political parties who reportedly moved into Dhaka ahead of the general election.
“We are staying vigilant. The Election Commission’s regulations bar outsiders beyond a specified time or without a valid reason. We will certainly take lawful action against such stays,” he said.
Shahidur reminded people about the largest-ever election deployment of law-enforcers. He said their technological capability to counter criminal activities has also increased.
“Almost every polling centre is under CCTV watch. Police have around 25,700 body cameras. We also have drones. RAB has dog squads, bomb disposal units, and helicopters,” he said.
Assuring appropriate and timely action in case of any poll-time disorder, the RAB DG said polling would be suspended in the worst-case scenario.
“If a polling centre is completely closed, or if the Election Commission deems voting impossible at that centre, the vote for that constituency may also be postponed,” he said.
“If such disturbances occur at one or two centres, voting will take place there later. We will be deployed with even greater strength in such locations,” he added.
He warned that those who try to disrupt the election, commit fraud, steal ballot boxes, or attack polling centres are at “high risk”.
“These people will likely face serious risks. And if they attempt sabotage or create disorder because they do not accept the election results, we will take the strictest possible action. We will not hesitate,” he said.
