Not a canal, but a dumping ground

The Shubhaddya canal, which was a notable source of water in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, now exists in name only. Instead of clean drinking water, almost half of the 7 km-long canal is now completely filled with waste. Piles of plastic garbage can be seen around the canal, which has turned into a trash dump. Regular waste from local garments and markets is accelerating the deterioration of the canal.

The 7km-long Shubhaddya canal is directly connected to the Buriganga River but is likely to die out soon due to the amount of waste dumped into it daily. The pollution is causing suffering to the people of Dhaka’s South Keraniganj. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
