In the last 24 hours, 1,042 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh, marking the highest daily figure of the year, while nine more people died due to the disease.
Previously, the highest single-day admission was 845 on Sept 28.
The death toll reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday is equal to the highest daily fatalities of the year, previously reported on Sept 21.
Due to government holidays on Friday and Saturday, data from districts outside Dhaka is often delayed, with full reports arriving on Sunday. As a result, Sunday typically sees a higher number of hospital admissions and deaths.
According to the health directorate’s Sunday bulletin, the total number of dengue hospitalisations for the year has now reached 49,907, and the death toll has risen to 212.
The DGHS also said, of the nine recent deaths, four occurred at Dhaka's Mugda Medical College Hospital, two at Dhaka Medical College, one at the DNCC COVID-19 Hospital, one at Mitford Hospital, and one at Cox's Bazar 250-bed hospital.
Of the dead, five were women and four men, with two of them teenagers -- 17 and 18, two in their thirties -- 32 and 35, three in their forties -- 43, 45, and 45, and two in their fifties -- 52 and 55.
September saw the highest number of hospitalisations and deaths this year, with 15,866 people admitted and 76 deaths recorded. In the first four days of October alone, 2,565 were hospitalised, and 14 died.
In July, 10,684 people were admitted, and 41 people died. Previous months had seen fewer cases, with 1,161 admissions in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August.
The worst outbreak came in 2023, when 321,179 patients were hospitalised and 1,705 died.
As of now, 2,439 dengue patients are hospitalised nationwide, including 787 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,652 in hospitals outside the capital.
