Another person has died from dengue in the past 24 hours, taking this year’s death toll from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease to 45.

In the same period, 358 new dengue patients were hospitalised, pushing the total number of admissions this year to 11,456.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin on Thursday, the deceased was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the Barishal Division.

Two people receiving treatment in Dhaka over the past two days have died.

Barishal division recorded the highest number of new dengue admissions as of Thursday, with 150 new patients hospitalised.

In addition, 78 patients have been admitted in the two city corporations of Dhaka, 45 in the Dhaka Division, five in the Mymensingh, 32 in the Chattogram, 14 in the Khulna, 29 in the Rajshahi, three in Rangpur and two in the Sylhet.

As many as 1,329 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country.

Of them, 351 were hospitalised in the capital with 978 across the rest of the country.

In 2024, a total of 101,214 patients were hospitalised due to dengue nationwide, with 575 fatalities reported.

This marks the third-highest number of hospitalisations due to dengue in the country’s history, while the death toll ranks as the second-highest.

The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000.

Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths, with 1,705.

In 2022, a total of 101,354 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh, marking the second-highest annual count.
