Four children, youths die in a day as dengue hospital admissions surpass 28,000 this year

The tally of deaths climbs to 114 this year

Four more people have died from dengue, all of whom are children and youths, over the past 24 hours, raising the total fatalities this year to 114, while hospital admissions exceeded 28,000 this year.

All four of the dead were from Dhaka South City, according to Saturday’s bulletin by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among them, two girls, aged 4 and 7, died at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, a 26-year-old woman at Mugda Medical College Hospital, and a 15-year-old boy at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Over the last 24 hours, 247 new patients were admitted, bringing total hospitalisations to 28,202 for the year.

Health directorate data reflect only hospitalised cases; many with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease are treated at home, leaving true infection numbers uncertain.

July remains the deadliest month this year, with 41 fatalities. Other monthly tolls include 31 this month, 19 in June, 10 in January, three in February, seven in April, and three in May. No deaths were reported in March.

Over the recent years, hospital admissions peaked at 321,179 in 2023, compared with 101,211 in 2024, 62,382 in 2022, 28,429 in 2021, 1,405 in 2020, and 101,354 in 2019. This July alone, 10,684 patients were hospitalised, with 7,222 admitted this month.

Among new admissions over the past day, 100 were from Dhaka’s two city corporations, 31 from Dhaka Division outside the city, three from Mymensingh, 57 from Chattogram, and 56 from Barishal.

As many as 1,307 patients are undergoing treatment nationwide, with 440 in Dhaka hospitals and 867 in facilities outside the capital.
