Bangladesh has recorded four more dengue deaths, taking the total fatalities due to the disease to 224 this year, while another 781 patients have been admitted to hospitals around the country in the last 24 hours.

The tally of reported hospitalisations rose to 52,885 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

In Thursday’s daily bulletin, of the four deaths recorded over the past day, two occurred at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while two others died at Kurmitola General Hospital and Mugda Medical College Hospital.

All of them were male, aged 13, 14, 39, and 55.

September saw the highest number of dengue-related hospital admissions, 15,866, and deaths, 76, this year. October has already seen 5,543 new patients and 26 deaths.

Earlier this year, 10,684 people were hospitalised in July, and 41 deaths were reported, while January saw 1,161 admissions, February 374, March 336, April 701, May 1,773, June 5,951, and August 10,496.

The mortality figures were highest in July, with 41 deaths, followed by January with 10, February with three, April with seven, May with three, June with 19, and August with 39. No deaths were reported in March.

The health directorate’s bulletin indicated that of the new admissions, 278 were from Dhaka’s two city corporation areas, the highest for any region. Other divisions reported as follows: Dhaka 101, Mymensingh 40, Chittagong 82, Khulna 48, Rajshahi 63, Rangpur 32, Barishal 130, and Sylhet 7.

Currently, 2,452 dengue patients are being treated in hospitals across the country, with 827 in Dhaka and 1,625 outside the capital.

Since 2000, the DGHS has tracked dengue-related hospitalisations and fatalities. In 2023, the highest-ever number of 321,179 people were hospitalised, with 1,705 fatalities.
