Bangladesh has recorded 803 new dengue hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, pushing the total for this year to 63,170 patients.

This year’s hospitalisations rank as the fourth-highest on record, according to health directorate count.

The highest was in 2023, when 321,179 patients were admitted. Previous major outbreaks include 2024 with 101,214 admissions, 2022 with 62,382, and 2019 with 101,354.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin on Thursday reported four deaths from dengue in the last 24 hours, bringing this year’s toll to 259.

Among them, two were men and two women, aged 60, 64, 64, and 72.

They died at Mugda Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, and Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.

September remains the deadliest month in terms of hospital admissions, with 15,866 patients admitted and 76 deaths recorded.

As many as 15,828 patients had been admitted this month, with 61 fatalities. July had seen 10,684 hospitalisations and 41 deaths.

Earlier months recorded lower numbers: January 1,161; February 374; March 336; April 701; May 1,773; June 5,951; and August 10,496 hospitalisations.

At the moment, 2,648 dengue patients are undergoing treatment nationwide, with 939 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,709 elsewhere.

Since 2000, the DGHS has maintained records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths. The peak came in 2023 with 321,179 admissions and 1,705 fatalities, marking the deadliest dengue outbreak in Bangladesh’s recorded history.
