He passes away during treatment at a Dhaka hospital

Celebrated actor Prabir Mitra, a luminary of the Bangladeshi film industry who graced the silver screen with powerful performances for over four decades, has passed away at the age of 84.
The end came at 10:10pm on Sunday at a private hospital in Dhaka.
“He’s gone, he left us,” his daughter-in-law Sonia Yasmin said, confirming his death with tears in her eyes.
A recipient of the National Film Award, Mitra had been receiving treatment since Dec 23, 2024 for multiple health issues.
According to Sonia, his condition worsened due to complications from lung infections and internal bleeding.
In recent years, the veteran actor had been living a confined life due to age-related ailments, including osteoporosis and other chronic conditions.
Throughout his career, Prabir Mitra won the hearts of audiences with his acting in numerous films and earned national recognition for his contributions to the Bangladeshi film industry.
The actor’s family said his body will be kept in a freezing vehicle at their residence in Dhanmondi for the night.
On Monday, after Zuhr prayers, his funeral prayer will be held at the Film Development Corporation, or FDC.
Another funeral service will take place at Channel i before he is laid to rest at Azimpur graveyard.
Mitra began his acting journey in school, performing the role of a guard in Rabindranath Tagore’s “Dak Ghar”, or the Post Office.
He later made his big-screen debut in Jolchhobi under director H Akbar.
Prabir Mitra’s last film appearance was in Briddashram, directed by SD Rubel.
In 1982, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo”, directed by Md Mohiuddin.
In 2018, he was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
He showcased his exceptional acting skills in several films, including Titas Ekti Nadir Naam, directed by the legendary Ritwik Ghatak, and Chabuk.
Prabir Mira frequently graced the silver screen as a beloved supporting actor, captivating audiences with his heartfelt portrayals.
Known for bringing to life characters like the honest, struggling brother or the kind-hearted friend, his performances resonated deeply with film enthusiasts.
His talent and sincerity earned widespread admiration, blurring the lines between his on-screen personas and real life.
Fans embraced him not just as an actor, but as the virtuous, compassionate soul he so passionately portrayed in his films.
Born in 1940 in Chandpur, Mitra spent his childhood in Old Dhaka.
He studied at St Gregory's High School and Jagannath College--now Jagannath University.
The actor leaves behind three sons and one daughter.
He lost his wife, Anjanta Mitra, in 2000 and his youngest son, Akash Mitra, passed away in 2012.
