Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” has topped Friday’s box office charts, earning $71 million from 4,425 North American theatres.
Forecasters expect it to rack up $150-175 million through the weekend.
That would beat the franchise’s previous best opening, set by “Toy Story 4”, which took in $120 million, Variety reports.
The film reportedly has a $250 million production budget, in addition to marketing costs.
“Toy Story 5” sees Buzz, Woody, and Jessie battle an edutainment tablet named Lilypad, which threatens their playtime with Bonnie.
Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack return, joined by newcomers Greta Lee, Keanu Reeves, and Bad Bunny, among others.
A24’s “The Death of Robin Hood” fared less well, finishing eighth with $1.1 million on opening day.
The Hugh Jackman-led film is expected to make $2.5 million through the weekend.
Second place went to Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day”, which made $4.9 million on Friday in its second weekend, with the North American total projected to reach $78.4 million by Sunday.
Third was Focus Features’ “Obsession”, which grossed $4.7 million in its sixth weekend. Its domestic total is set to hit $215 million, against a reported production budget of just $1 million.
Rounding out the top five were A24’s “Backrooms” in fourth and Paramount’s “Scary Movie” in fifth.
