Global pop icon Ariana Grande and "Bridgerton" star Jonathan Bailey have officially confirmed their return to the London stage in a major production of Stephen Sondheim’s "Sunday in the Park with George".
The announcement, which follows months of industry speculation, marks a significant theatrical homecoming for the “Wicked” co-stars.
The Guardian reports that the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is scheduled to open at the Barbican Centre in the summer of 2027.
According to the British daily, the production explores the life of pointillist painter Georges Seurat and his fictional great-grandson, a narrative crafted by Sondheim’s long-term collaborator James Lapine.
The stars recently shared a social media photograph in front of Seurat’s masterpiece, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte", currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago.
As per the British daily, this new iteration will be helmed by director Marianne Elliott, who previously led Bailey to an Olivier Award in the 2018 revival of Company.
The Guardian added that the production features designs by Tom Scutt, the creative force behind the current revival of Into the Woods at London’s Bridge Theatre. While Ariana has secured her place as a global chart-topper, this project represents her first professional theatrical appearance in the UK capital.
It reminded readers that the singer is already booked for a 10-night residency at the O2 Arena this summer as part of her Eternal Sunshine tour.
Produced by Empire Street Productions, the revival arrives years after a planned West End transfer starring Jake Gyllenhaal was abandoned due to the pandemic.
The newspaper said tickets are expected to go on sale in May, with further casting details to be released in the coming months.
The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1984 and has since seen successful London runs at the National Theatre and the Menier Chocolate Factory.
