Arthy Ahmed has come under scrutiny after being nominated for the Ekushey Padak in dance this year, with a section of performers questioning her “credentials” and calling for a review of the decision.
On Monday, a group identifying themselves as “Bangladesher Nrityoshilpibrindo” held a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka, urging authorities to verify whether the 2026 award in the dance category has been conferred in line with existing guidelines.
Some among them said the nomination process should be reviewed, with opinions sought from experienced, senior and recognised figures in the field.
They also called for a “transparent, fair and institutional” evaluation system.
Responding to the criticism, Arthy said that many of those who spoke at the briefing were her teachers and seniors.
“I have been saying from the very first day that this recognition belongs to my teachers -- especially Guru Lubna Marium,” she added.
She rejected suggestions of any irregularities in securing the nomination.
“I can say with confidence that no investigation will find any evidence of corruption on my part,” Arthy said. “If they feel it necessary to criticise the process, they are free to do so.”
She added that her seniors were within their rights to appeal to the state for the cancellation of her Ekushey Padak, and that she had nothing further to say on that matter.
“If the state considers me worthy of the Ekushey Padak, I will accept it. I take the criticism from my teachers in a positive spirit.”
Earlier this month, the interim government announced the list of nominees, naming Arthy as the recipient in the dance category.
