Individual taxpayers will get another month to file returns as the National Board of Revenue has pushed the deadline to file the returns to Mar 31 for the 2025–26 financial year amid administrative reshuffle.

Thursday’s move marks the fourth extension for individual taxpayers.

The original deadline of Nov 30, 2025, was first extended to Dec 31, then to Jan 31, 2026, and later to Feb 28.

Filing online returns (e-return) is mandatory this year for all taxpayers.

Exceptions include those aged 65 or above, physically challenged or specially-abled individuals, Bangladeshis living abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh -- though they may submit e-returns voluntarily.

Taxpayers’ authorised representatives can also file e-returns on their behalf.

Bangladeshis residing abroad can submit e-returns using passport numbers, National ID, and email addresses, despite not being strictly bound by the online requirement.

Those unable to submit e-returns must apply to their deputy commissioner of taxes by Feb 15.

E-returns can be submitted without uploading supporting documents; payment through any banking channel or mobile financial service automatically generates an e-return acknowledgement.

NBR has set up a call centre at 09643717171 and help desks across all tax zones to assist taxpayers.

Even after the deadline, returns can be filed with a penalty.

Late submission incurs 2 percent monthly interest, and tax is recalculated on total income without exemptions.

Partial months are counted as full months, and tax relief will not be granted in such cases.

The extension aims to ease compliance during the political transition and ensure taxpayers have adequate time to meet their obligations.
