NBR eases e-return filing for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad

The tax collection agency introduces a system that allows OTPs to be sent to the expatriate taxpayers’ email addresses

E-return filing made easier for overseas taxpayers

Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad can now submit their online income tax returns or e-returns via email if they do not have a biometric SIM card registered in their name.

Previously, a One-Time Password (OTP) was sent to a Bangladeshi mobile SIM with biometric registration in the taxpayer's own name for online return filing, which created problems for those living overseas in submitting their e-returns.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) arranged to send the OTP to the email addresses of overseas Bangladeshi taxpayers instead of their mobile phones to resolve this issue, according to a press release issued by the agency on Thursday.

In a special order for the financial year 2025–26, the NBR made online submission of income tax returns mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except for foreign employees in Bangladesh, taxpayers aged 65 or above, those with physical disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshis residing abroad, and legal representatives of taxpayers who have died.

These groups may also opt to file online if they wish.

The NBR said that since online return filing is simple and hassle-free, and the taxpayer can instantly print the automatic acknowledgement receipt of the e-return submission and the income tax certificate with the necessary information, many expatriate Bangladeshi taxpayers wish to file their returns online.

"However, they were facing difficulties in submitting e-returns because the OTP for registration on the e-return site was sent to the taxpayer's Bangladeshi mobile SIM biometrically registered in their own name."

The tax collection agency said, "The NBR introduced a system to send the OTP to the personal email addresses of Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad instead of their mobile phones to resolve this issue."

"In this case, to confirm the identity and location of the overseas Bangladeshi taxpayer, an application must be submitted via email ([email protected]) along with information such as their passport number, national ID card number, copy of visa seal, email address, and photo. Upon submission of the application, the OTP registration link will be sent to the applicant's email.

"Through this link, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad can use the OTP on the e-return portal to register and easily submit their income tax returns online."

When submitting an e-return online, no documents or paperwork need to be uploaded.

The taxpayer, however, must have on hand all necessary documents and paperwork, based on which they will enter their income, expenses, assets and liabilities information in the e-return.

In the 2025-26 tax year, taxpayers have responded enthusiastically to e-return submission, filing over 850,000 income tax returns online so far.

The NBR requests all respected individual taxpayers residing both at home and abroad to use the e-return system to file their income tax returns for the 2025-2026 tax year by Nov 30.
