Bangladesh’s batting unravelled in dramatic fashion as they crashed to a 100-run defeat against New Zealand in their Women’s World Cup fixture.
Chasing 228 in Guwahati on Thursday, Bangladesh slumped to 33 for 6, losing any realistic chance of a contest inside 14 overs.
Their first boundary off the bat did not arrive until the 90th delivery, underlining a dismal display that saw six batters depart before the team had even reached 50.
After an opening-match win against Pakistan, Bangladesh have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the tournament, including Tuesday’s loss to England.
Earlier, disciplined spin bowling had restricted New Zealand to 227 for nine, but the chase quickly fell apart. Only Fahima Khatun offered resistance with a gritty 34 off 80 balls, guiding Bangladesh past the 100-mark. Among the top seven, she was the only batter to reach double figures.
At one stage, Bangladesh looked in danger of being bowled out for under 100 before Fahima and Rabeya Khan (25 off 39) added 44 for the eighth wicket. The innings eventually folded for 127 in 39.5 overs.
New Zealand’s victory, their first of the campaign, was built on a composed partnership between captain Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday after a shaky start.
Devine struck a steady 63 off 85 balls, while Halliday, named Player of the Match, top-scored with 69 off 104, the pair putting on 112 for the fourth wicket to rescue their side from 38 for three.
Leg-spinner Rabeya Khan was again Bangladesh’s standout performer with 3 for 30 from 10 overs, while left-arm spinner Nahida Akhter chipped in with 1 for 30.
New Zealand’s quicks then took charge. Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu claimed three wickets apiece, with Rosemary Mair and Amelia Kerr adding crucial early strikes.
Bangladesh’s top order never recovered from the early blows: Sharmin Akhter fell to an inswinger from Mair, Nigar Sultana holed out attempting a lofted stroke, and a string of poor shots compounded the collapse.
By the 14th over, the scoreboard read 33 for six — a statistic that summed up Bangladesh’s power-play misery.
Nahida contributed 17 before falling at 66 for seven. The lower order added a measure of defiance, but the margin of defeat reflected a gulf in composure between the two sides.
New Zealand’s bowlers shared the spoils -- Jess Kerr (3-21), Tahuhu (3-22), and Mair (2-20) leading the way -- as Bangladesh were bowled out 10 overs early.
Bangladesh will next face South Africa on Monday, needing a win to keep their campaign alive.
