Bangladesh have crashed to a heavy defeat in the first ODI against Sri Lanka after a shocking middle-order collapse saw seven wickets fall for just five runs.

The defeat on Wednesday at Colombo’s Premadasa Stadium gives Sri Lanka a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Put in to bat, Sri Lanka recovered from early blows to post 244, built around skipper Charith Asalanka’s commanding century.

In reply, Bangladesh folded for 167 despite being 100 for 1 at one stage -- a dramatic collapse sealing a 77-run defeat.

Tanzim Hasan struck first, removing Pathum Nissanka for a duck.

Taskin Ahmed then removed Nishan Madushka and Kamindu Mendis inside seven overs, reducing the hosts to three down early.

Asalanka and Kusal Mendis added 60 for the fourth wicket before debutant Tanvir Islam claimed his first international scalp, removing Mendis for 45.

Asalanka then stitched a 64-run partnership with Janith Liyanage, who scored 29, until Najmul Hossain Shanto broke the stand on his fourth ball.

Asalanka kept the innings ticking with support from Milan Rathnayake and Wanindu Hasaranga, both scoring 22, before falling for 106 off 123 balls -- his fifth ODI ton.

Taskin returned from injury to finish with four wickets, while Tanzim took three.

Chasing 245, Bangladesh started well with a 29-run opening stand between debutant Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan.

Shanto joined Tanzid to add 71 for the second wicket before Shanto’s run out for 23 triggered a collapse.

Tanzid top-scored with 62 off 61 balls but was caught by Liyanage as pressure mounted.

Spin from Hasaranga and Kamindu dismantled the middle order.

From 100 for 1, Bangladesh tumbled to 105 for 8, losing seven wickets for five runs in just 27 balls.

Jaker Ali showed resistance with a 51-run cameo, hitting four fours and six sixes to reduce the deficit.

The second ODI is set for Saturday at the same venue.
