Chittagong University unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor, setting a 48-hour deadline over allegations of irregular and nepotistic appointments.

The demand came on Thursday after students staged a six-hour sit-in from 10am outside the main gate of the administrative building.

Abdullah Al Noman, general secretary of the university branch of the student wing, said they had expected a fair and transparent campus, but over the past 15–16 months the administration had advanced a particular group’s agenda.

He accused the administration of recent appointments favouring relatives and party affiliates, noting that officials had refused to disclose appointment details publicly.

He added that neither the VC nor the pro-VC (academic) had attended office that day, questioning whether their absence indicated a lack of resolve.

“If our demands are not met within 48 hours, stricter measures will follow from Sunday,” he warned.

Sazzad Hossain Hridoy, organisational secretary, alleged that the pro-VC’s daughter was appointed over more qualified candidates through undue influence, demanding full disclosure of the appointment process.

Joint General Secretary Mohammad Yasin criticised the administration for prioritising appointments over student-friendly initiatives, asserting that resignation was the only solution.

At 1, pro-VC (administrative) Prof Kamal Uddin attempted to enter the administrative building via the main gate but was blocked by student demonstrators, entering instead through another gate.

In the VC’s absence, a student delegation met with Prof Kamal, who said he would convey all demands to the VC.
