The Chittagong University (CU) administration has escorted Hasan Mohammad Roman, a “pro-Awami League teacher”, back to his residence after he was detained by student leaders for nine hours.
On Saturday at 9pm, the teacher was taken from the administrative building in the proctor’s vehicle.
Earlier, around 12pm during admission exams, leaders of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) forcibly took the assistant professor from the law department to the proctor’s office.
At 7pm, he was brought to the office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Mohammed Shamim Uddin Khan where a meeting took place with the pro-vice chancellor, Proctor Hossain Shaid Shohrowardy, and CUCSU leaders.
Following the talks, CUCSU Assistant Welfare Secretary Jannatul Ferdous Rita tried to prevent the teacher leaving, however, the university moved him out.
Prof Roman denied the allegations against him. He said, “The screenshots shown about drugs are not mine.”
Asked about claims linking him with the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Awami league’s student wing, he said: “They contacted me. I did not reach out to them myself.
“I was not involved in any activities against the July Uprising.”
CUCSU Law and Human Rights Secretary Fazle Rabbi said, “We spent around two and a half hours at the police station to file a case. However, the authorities did not accept it. The officer in charge said permission from senior officials was required to register the case.”
CUCSU General Secretary Sayeed Bin Habib added, “During the time of the previous ‘fascist’ government, he used to bring students and file cases against them.”
CUCSU Assistant General Secretary Ayyubur Rahman Toufiq said, “The way CUCSU leaders detained [Prof Roman] is not acceptable from a responsible standpoint. Whether this incident was triggered by criticism over appointments remains a question, as leaders suddenly became active on Roman’s case but stayed silent over irregularities in appointments.”
Hathazari Police chief Md Jahidur Rahman, meanwhile, said no case has been filed against Prof Roman.
Proctor Shaid, however, claimed a case exists. “A case has been lodged at Hathazari Police Station. We ensured his safety while letting him go, as the proctorial body cannot impose punishment.”
The Jahangirnagar University Nationalist Teachers’ Forum condemned the harassment of Prof Roman, expressing “concern and strong disapproval”.
In a statement on Saturday, the forum said: “Public humiliation, physical harassment, or creating an environment of fear for a teacher in a higher education institution directly undermines the country’s overall education system.
“Differences or disputes should be resolved only through law, administrative investigation, and proper procedures. ‘Mob justice’ is never acceptable,” it reads.
