The Dhaka University administration has announced that it will limit the entry of cars to the campus from 5pm to 10pm on weekdays.
Only vehicles that carry a DU sticker or are employed by emergency services will be allowed to access the area. Vehicles entry will also be limited from 3pm on holidays.
The announcement was made in an emergency notice from the Proctor’s Office.
The notice said the decision was being taken for the overall safety of Dhaka University students.
No vehicles, other than those with Dhaka University stickers, or those belonging to emergency services (ambulances, doctors, patients, journalists and other government vehicles) will be allowed to enter the campus from 3pm to 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays and from 5pm to 10pm on office days, the statement said.
Asked about the decision, Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said: “Students come to the campus for classes in the morning and, as there are two schools and a few banks in the area, people also come to campus for office work.”
“But in the afternoon, most people come to the campus for hangouts. These restrictions have been imposed to bring them under control. We hope that this will ease the crowding that is seen in the afternoon.”
Asked about former students coming to the campus, he said: “Cards will be handed out to former students. The process is ongoing.”
Asked about the decision, Ganatantrik Chhatra Jote Convener Salman Siddiqui told bdnews24.com: "The university is a public space. People should never feel that they cannot enter just because it is a university.”
“But we do want heavy vehicles to be barred from the campus.”
The university had previously begun to control entry to the area by barricading seven entrances at Shahbagh, Doyel Chattar, Burn Unit, Shibbari Crossing, Fuller Road, Palashi intersection and Nilkhet on Friday.
