Chief Returning Officer Prof Mohammad Jasim Uddin has played down concerns over the atmosphere surrounding the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Hall Union elections, framing the issue as a routine divergence of opinion within the university community.
Despite murmurs of discontent among certain university stakeholders, the message from him is clear: the process will go on, and as of now, there is no official reconsideration of the polling date.
"We haven’t found anything negative," he told reporters on Sunday. “When there's a meeting, does everyone agree on everything? Not at all. Things follow the majority's direction. There's no need to worry about this.”
His comments came days after several hall provosts reportedly expressed unease during a joint meeting with the Election Commission and the Provost Standing Committee, with some even suggesting a postponement of the balloting.
The university administration, however, is moving forward with the electoral timeline for the DUCSU and Hall Union elections for 2025, with polling set for Sept 9.
The final voter list will be released on Monday, following the verification and selection of nomination papers.
According to a preliminary list published last Thursday, 462 candidates have been declared valid for 28 contested positions. The Vice President (VP) post has drawn the highest number of contenders, with 48 nominations, while 19 candidates are in the running for General Secretary (GS) and 28 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
Prof Jasim Uddin acknowledged the broader ecosystem required to run the election smoothly.
“This election isn't something our commission can conduct alone. We need support from the university administration, hall administration, proctorial team—even teachers will be involved in various ways,” he said.
“We’ll remain in constant consultation. Naturally, there will be agreements and disagreements, but ultimately, we’ll reach a final decision together.”
