Natore, Sep 18 (bdnews24.com)—North Bengal Sugar Mill employees have gone for indefinite work abstention, just days ahead of its sugar production period, demanding declaration of a separate wage structure.
Several workers of the sugar mill told bdnews24.com that they were compelled to call the abstention programme as the government did not pay heed to their long cherished demand.
Eye witnesses said that at least 300 workers started the abstention at about 8am, after holding protest rallies at the factory premises. They also barred the officials from entering inside the factory.
Workers-Employees Union president Shahidul Islam, general secretary Anwar Kamal, and other labour leaders from different levels addressed the rally.
Kamal said, "Ever since the government declared the pay scale for the government employees, we have been demanding a separate wage structure for the sugar mill workers."
"Our movement programmes will continue until the government meets our demand," he added.
Engineer Haris Ali, managing director of the mill, told bdnews24.com, "This demand cannot be met locally. We have sent it to the government for consideration."
The top official also hoped that the government would take the issue seriously and initiate emergency steps to mitigate the situation.
