Dhaka, Apr 1 (bdnews24.com)—The parliamentary standing committee on commerce ministry on Sunday proposed making a law to protect the innocent against the deceitful business of multilevel marketing (MLM).
The watchdog also decided to request the finance minister and central bank governor for action against MLM companies like Destiny-2000.
ABM Abul Kashem, chairman of the standing committee, briefed the media at the parliament media centre over the decisions taken in its 33rd meeting.
"These types of companies are swindling people out of millions of taka. We will write to the finance minister and Bangladesh Bank for stopping illegal banking and businesses. We will request for immediate action," said Kashem.
On Mar 6 last year, the then commerce minister Muhammad Faruk Khan said that a law was underway to bring the MLM companies within the legal framework.
There are 62 registered MLM companies operating Bangladesh, Faruk Khan had said.
He had further informed journalists that only Destiny has 4.5 million clients. Another prominent MLM company is Unipay-2 U.
Issues like prices of essentials, its supply to the market, and market condition were also discussed in Sunday's meeting, which also recommended necessary measures to reduce prices of egg and edible oil.
The committee proposed initiatives for keeping the prices of 16 items of essentials stable and within the reach of people during the month of Ramadan.
